The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network will chair Mini-symposium 18: ‘Reef Status and Trends’ at the upcoming 11th International Coral Reef Initiative Symposium in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida 7th to 11th of July, 2008.
More than 230 abstracts were submitted to this mini-symposium and have now been reviewed. About 40 oral presentations will be made during the mini-symposium and, based on the content of the abstracts submitted, the mini-symposium will be divided up into 6 sub-themes, namely:
1. Long-term monitoring of coral reefs 2. Large-scale monitoring of coral reefs 3. The status of coral reefs of Florida 4. The status of coral reefs of the Wider Caribbean 5. Socio-economic assessments of coral reefs 6. Examining methods, ecological events and future trends
The presentations and discussion during the mini-symposium will address these 4 questions:
1. What are the current status and trends of the world’s coral reefs? 2. How does recovery from stress differ depending on the extent and severity of habitat damage and variations in depth and reef structure? 3. How have global coral reef monitoring programs contributed to coral reef research, conservation and management? 4. Can we improve coral reef ecological and socioeconomic monitoring to answer the big questions: how are reefs responding to global climate change?
The mini-symposium will be co-chaired by Clive Wilkinson and David Souter the Coordinators of the GCRMN, Christy Loper, GCRMN’s Socio-economic Coordinator and Loureene Jones, the GCRMN Coordinator for the Northern Caribbean and Western Atlantic Node.
